Description
Originally from Bucklebury, Laura studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. In 2007 she qualified as a barrister, specialising in employment and public law. In 2015, she was appointed to the panel of counsel operated by the Equality and Human Rights Commission and in 2017 she worked as Counsel to the Child Sex Abuse Inquiry. Prior to her career as a barrister, Laura worked as a journalist for the BBC and Reuters, and also worked for Hillary Clinton in her New York Senate Office.
Since being elected as the Member of Parliament for Newbury in 2019, Laura has been a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee and the Justice Select Committee.
In Parliament, Laura has campaigned for tougher laws on violence against women. She was instrumental in introducing two changes to the law in the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 concerning sexual violence. Laura has also campaigned for supporting families with childcare costs and flexible working rights.
From November 2022 to November 2023, Laura was a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) at the Ministry of Justice. Laura was appointed as the Minister for Victims and Safeguarding in November 2023, working across the Home Office and Ministry of Justice, with a focus on safeguarding, child protection and tackling violence against women and girls.
Locally, Laura is holding Thames Water to account on their environmental performance, and has led a long campaign on reducing waiting times for autism and ADHD diagnoses for children.
Laura is married with two daughters.
